Utility Imposter Scam - You are enjoying your air-conditioned home on a hot summer day when the phone rings. The caller claims to be from your electric company and announces they are going to turn off your electricity in 2 hours if you don’t pay a past due bill. If this happens to you – don’t sweat. This is a clever con that tries to shake you down for cold hard cash.
In some cases, an imposter may show up at your door in a work uniform claiming that your electric meter is not working properly and must be immediately replaced or ask to come into your home to perform a repair or do an energy audit.
Never allow a stranger into your home or give in to high pressure demands for payment. Call your utility company directly and verify the visitor actually works for them. Do the same if you are told you face a shutoff unless a payment is made immediately.
