A Long Island five-year-old born without a left hand recently became the youngest recipient of a high-tech bionic arm. Jordan Marotta and his mom Ashley traveled from their home in Dix Hills to the offices of Open Bionics in Manhattan so Jordan could be fitted with his new prosthetic, styled to look like “Iron Man.” The five-year-old was excited to show off his new bionic arm, hailing a taxi on Park Avenue.
The bionic arm, which Jordan calls his "hero" arm, uses electrodes and sensors to detect muscle contractions, allowing for natural hand and finger movements. They’re usually reserved for older children, but he proved mature enough to receive the custom-made prosthetic.
Although Jordan had a mostly normal childhood and excelled in sports like baseball and karate, he recently began to understand better that he’s different from his peers. But, the new bionic arm has shifted his thinking and boosted his self-confidence. “This really makes him feel good,” Ashley says of her son’s new hero arm, “He’s so confident.”
