Spirit Airlines, based in Dania Beach, Florida, is introducing new premium options for its travelers. The airline announced on Tuesday (May 13) that it will offer extra legroom seating and two free checked bags for its cardholders. The extra-legroom seating will begin installation in June and is expected to be available on most of Spirit's fleet by July. The two-free-checked-bags policy, a collaboration with Bank of America, will roll out later this year for those with the airline's branded credit card.

This move is part of Spirit's strategy to attract more upscale leisure travelers following its emergence from bankruptcy in March. The airline, known for its low-cost model, is shifting towards value-added services to compete for higher-spending customers. The new seating will feature seven rows at the front of the aircraft, offering over 40 seats with 32 inches of pitch, compared to the standard 28 inches. The premium fare also includes a carry-on bag, no change or cancellation fees, Priority Boarding, reserved overhead bin space, and complimentary snacks and nonalcoholic beverages.

Rana Ghosh, Spirit Airlines' senior vice president and chief commercial officer, said the airline is "adding more value and perks for our loyalty members at a time when others are taking away benefits." This comes as other airlines, like Southwest, have reduced passenger benefits, ending its "two bags fly free" policy earlier this year.

Travel expert Katy Nastro noted that Spirit's new offerings are a strategic move to attract premium customers, even as overall travel growth falters. By focusing on comfort and convenience, Spirit aims to reposition itself in the competitive market while maintaining its budget-conscious appeal.
