Last week, extreme cold forced schools in Jackson Township, Ohio, to close, giving bus driver Todd Morris a day off. While driving home from an appointment, the former police officer turned school bus driver noticed smoke coming from a house on his route and quickly realized it wasn’t from a chimney. The home belonged to a family whose children ride his bus, and knowing they were home that day, he immediately called the fire department and rushed inside to help.
Inside the burning home, Morris searched for the children, yelling their names as the smoke thickened. After multiple attempts to breathe fresh air outside and re-enter the house, he discovered the family’s two dogs at the bottom of the stairs. The bus driver guided one dog to safety and carried the other, who had special needs, out of the home as the fire spread.
Although the family lost most of their belongings in the fire, no one was hurt and they’re grateful Morris’s quick actions saved their pets. Their neighbor describes the family as “good people” and expressed heartbreak over their loss. Reflecting on the incident, Morris says, “Something put me there in the right place at the right time.”
