Earlier this month, Detroit firefighter Matt Dunaj found himself at his breaking point after years of stress from work, financial difficulties, and personal challenges. One night, alone in his basement, he was on the verge of ending his life. As he prepared to, his Goldendoodle, Mia, rushed to his side, licking his face and interrupting the moment with unconditional love.
Dunaj credits Mia with snapping him out of his despair and saving his life. The next morning, he took steps toward recovery, contacting his brother and Behavioral Health Treatment and Recovery. Soon after, he began receiving the help he needed to start his journey of healing. His decision to share his story was motivated by the tragic suicide of a co-worker, and he hopes his experience encourages others to seek help.
Now, Dunaj says he’s been given a "new lease on life," and he’s spending as much time as he can with Mia, enjoying their walks and the special bond they share. He calls his dog his hero, crediting her love for giving him the strength to keep going. Through his story, Dunaj hopes to inspire others to reach out for support when they need it most.
