Early one morning last week, a family dog named Scruffy in The Woodlands, Texas, alerted his owners to a house fire. Firefighters report that Scruffy’s unusual barking and growling woke the homeowners, who discovered a fire on the stovetop with flames reaching the cabinets. The family quickly contained the fire and safely exited the house before firefighters arrived to make sure the blaze was fully extinguished and remove the smoke.
According to the local fire department, the fire started when a plastic bowl left on the still-hot stove ignited. It caused damage to the stovetop and nearby kitchen items, but was prevented from spreading further thanks to Scruffy’s warning.
Following the fire, firefighters installed several smoke alarms in the home to provide better protection in the future. The department praised Scruffy's actions and stressed the importance of maintaining working smoke alarms. They’re also reminding residents to avoid leaving combustible items near stoves.
