Last week, a 31-year-old Australian dad made a bold citizen’s arrest of a would-be thief armed with a hammer. While out on a shopping trip with his partner in Bendigo, Victoria, local builder Anthony Haby heard what sounded like gunshots and screams coming from a nearby jewelry store. He rushed into the store, where he saw a 20-something man smashing glass display cases with a hammer. Without hesitation, Haby tackled the man to the ground and pinned him until police arrived.
His partner Jane Fleming assisted staff in exiting the store safely while Haby subdued the thief. Staff members praised his courage, with employee Tina Carson calling him “an Aussie hero” and noting that he rushed in despite believing that the robber had a gun. Haby, however, downplays the praise, saying he was just doing what anyone would do and that he’s glad no one was hurt.
Store manager Cheryl Luvara says the team has nominated him for a bravery award, acknowledging his quick and selfless action. The business later posted a message of thanks on social media, expressing gratitude to Haby and the shopping center’s management for their support during the harrowing incident.
