On Memorial Day in Austin, Texas, siblings Erin Boeckman and Daniel Russell completed the 32nd annual CapTex Triathlon together, marking an emotional milestone in their shared journey. Daniel, who uses a wheelchair due to lasting damage from childhood leukemia, was carried through the entire race by his sister, who’s also his bone marrow donor. This was Erin’s 47th triathlon, but her first with her brother by her side. She says that she trained specifically for the physical demands of carrying him safely.
The race involved a 750-meter swim, a 12.3-mile bike ride, and a 3.1-mile run, with support from volunteers and family members, including Erin’s husband and son. Daniel expressed deep gratitude for his sister and said her support has helped him defy the odds throughout his life. He also credits his young nephew as a major source of motivation, aspiring to be the best uncle he can be.
At the finish line, Erin called the experience the most meaningful moment of her racing career and a celebration of the love and perseverance that defines their bond. Daniel describes the sensation of crossing the finish line as feeling like he was flying and says the opportunity to complete the race as a team with his sister was priceless.
