During her family’s annual trip from their home in Temecula to historic Bishop, California, self-described hockey mom Ryann McCaffrey came across a kitten stranded in the median of Interstate 15 in Cajon Pass. They pulled over, and she was able to use some ham from her kid’s Lunchable to lure the frightened kitten close enough to scoop him up.
After safely getting the kitten into their car, McCaffrey’s husband drove to the nearest pet store for supplies before continuing their trip. Once they reached Bishop, they visited a veterinarian who estimated the feral kitten to be about nine weeks old. They named him “Bugs” after discovering his love for eating bugs, even when offered premium cat food.
The family cut their vacation short to bring Bugs home, where he quickly began adjusting to his new life. McCaffrey posted a video of the dramatic roadside rescue on social media, drawing praise from many for her quick thinking. And for bringing in the newest member of their household, she’s earned the title of hero from her family.
