Last Friday in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts, five-year-old Jack Buss was playing in his front yard when he fell into a concealed well. The cover of the well slipped as he stepped on it, sending him plunging 20 feet down. Trapped at the bottom and clinging to a pole, Jack’s terrified cries had his mother, Kathleen Freeman, screaming for help.
Her calls were heard by 11-year-old neighbor Juliana Fischer, who rushed to help, grabbing a nearby ladder and, with her dad’s help, lowering it into the well so Jack could climb out. To everyone’s relief, the little boy made it safely back to the surface with just a few scratches. Freeman says she’ll always be grateful for Juliana’s quick thinking and bravery.
Emergency crews arrived soon after and secured the well with a heavy metal plate and cement blocks to prevent another fall. Jack was taken to the hospital for a check-up and released later that day. Juliana is now being celebrated as a neighborhood hero, but she insists she just did what anyone else would have done.
