Officer Buys Stranded Deaf Traveler A Train Ticket Home

Pittsburgh Police Officer Steven Harris recently responded to a call about an “unruly” man at the Greyhound station, but soon discovered the traveler was not causing any trouble. The man was deaf, unable to read or speak English, and had been stranded at the station when his bus left with his luggage and money. Harris says the man was just trying to get to New York and eventually to Montreal.

The officer attempted to help the man by using an ASL translator and then setting up a hotspot so the man could type messages in his native French and have them translated to English. He even tried contacting the traveler’s aid and the man’s family, but none of these efforts worked. Refusing to leave him stranded, Harris went above and beyond to help the stranded traveler.

Using his own money, the officer purchased a $113 train ticket to make sure the man would be able to reunite with his belongings in New York. “We’re supposed to be good men,” Harris explains, “Good men helping other good men. That’s it.” He doesn’t expect to see the man again, but hopes his act inspires others to show kindness when they can. The department shared the story on social media, where commenters praised the officer for his compassion and commitment to helping a stranger in need.
