Over the weekend, Buffalo Bills wide receiver Khalil Shakir helped save 19 dogs from being euthanized by assisting Nickel City Canine Rescue with a transport from Clarke County Animal Shelter. The Shakirs previously rescued their own dog, Missy, from the same shelter, making the effort especially meaningful for the family. Shakir and his wife, Sayler, have been part of rescue missions before, including one earlier this year that saved 26 dogs.
The rescue came just one day after the Shakir Family Foundation hosted a pet adoption event in Buffalo for eight local rescues with several Bills players taking part. Nickel City Canine Rescue saw 18 dogs in their care adopted during the event, and that’s where Shakir learned about the scheduled transport and offered to join in the effort.
Shakir arrived with his mother, Mona, and two close friends to help with the rescue operation. A representative from Nickel City Canine Rescue noted his enthusiasm and commitment to returning to support the dogs again. Pics and video of the transport have been shared widely on social media, showing Shakir smiling as he opens the van doors to greet the pups.
