A family in Peru is crediting their dog with saving the lives of the entire family after a terrifying attack on their home. In the middle of the night, a suspect threw a stick of dynamite into the courtyard of journalist Carlos Mesías Zárate’s house. Security footage shows the family’s cocker spaniel mix, Manchis, racing toward the explosive.
The video captures Manchis pawing at the dynamite and then chewing through its fuse before it could ignite. “She chewed it and chewed it and saved our lives,” Zárate says. He believes his family was targeted because of his work as the editor of the media company Central de Noticias, and that they only escaped tragedy because of his dog’s actions.
While Manchis is safe, the incident damaged her vocal cords, leaving her unable to bark. Still, Zárate and his family say they are thankful every day for their four-legged hero’s sacrifice and courage. They’re celebrating her bravery, grateful that she protected her family from harm.
