This summer, Daniel Drouin of Alberton, Prince Edward Island, lost his family’s home to a fire, but weeks later his life took an unexpected turn for the better. The musician, who’d purchased a $50 raffle ticket for a Big Brothers Big Sisters fundraiser before the fire, received a call last week informing him that he was the winner of the grand prize: a brand new, fully furnished, prefabricated cottage. “It’s life-changing really,” Drouin says, calling it “such a weird coincidence” given what his family’s been through.
The raffle, which sold about 1,400 tickets, offered a choice between the cottage or $150,000 in cash. Drouin says he was skeptical when first contacted by executive director Myron Yates, initially thinking it might be a prank until Yates called him again to confirm.
On Monday, Drouin visited his new fully finished cottage at the offices of Big Brothers Big Sisters in Charlottetown while he was there taking care of the paperwork. He says the win means a “fresh start” for his family and will allow him to reunite with his two children, who’ve been staying separately with friends and grandparents since the fire.
