A rescue effort unfolded over the weekend in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, after a woman lost consciousness while behind the wheel of her car and drove into a pond. Mount Pleasant Police released video showing officers responding after witnesses reported that the driver was trapped in the sinking vehicle.
When Corporal Robert “Trey” Mathewes arrived, Sergeant Connor Byrne was already in the water and reported that the woman was unconscious in the driver’s seat. Mathewes entered the pond to help as Byrne broke a window to reach her. At first, the officers couldn’t open the door and the woman was still strapped into her seatbelt as the vehicle continued to sink.
After officers opened the passenger-side door, the car began sinking more quickly. The woman regained consciousness as water filled the car, and Sergeant Brad Strode and EMS personnel helped open the driver’s side door. Strode cut her seatbelt, EMS and Mathewes pulled her from the vehicle, and responders swam her to shore, where fire personnel used a rope to bring her onto land and began life-saving measures.
