Coffee and tea are the most common beverages drank in the morning to perk us up. There is no actual cure for lack of sleep and the best way to beat that common rundown feeling is by getting good rest. New research shows that caffeine can helps us wake up but doesn't help us with challenging tasks.
According to research done by Michigan State University caffeine can help keep you alert but might not actually be able to increase your brain functions. Sleep deprived volunteers were given either a caffeine pill or a placebo to see how they handled various tasks. Dr. Kimberly Fenn lead the study, a psychology professor, who said they found being sleep deprived impaired performance with both types of tasks.
The introduction of caffeine can help those who are sleep deprived get through the mundane easy tasks but as to more difficult situations our cognitive abilities are lowered. She said "Caffeine may improve the ability to stay awake and attend to a task, but it doesn't do much to prevent the sort of procedural errors that can cause things like medical mistakes and car accidents."
Not only can the lack of sleep affect your cognitive thinking but can alter your mood as well and even take a toll on your immunity over time. Fenn explains that masking your tiredness with coffee, tea and energy drinks is one of the reasons why sleep deprivation can be so dangerous.
