Reaching for the unhealthy snacks like cookies and chips instead of grabbing some carrots or an apple? We have all been there, craving something fatty, sugary and not so healthy for us. Sometimes, willpower is not enough to fight off the urge to indulge but you can overcome it. With a few tricks from nutritionists and dieticians you can cut down that mindless overeating.
First you must understand why you are craving those fatty, sugary foods. Nutritionist, Dena Gershkovich, explains that giving in to a craving doesn't mean you are weak, it means you are human. Our bodies crave foods that are high in fat and sugar. That is because fat is the most efficient source of energy and sugar can be absorbed by the body quickly.
Make sure you are eating regularly throughout the day. The best way to avoid those cravings is by making sure you don't get too hungry and reach for something not so healthy.
According to dietician, Melissa Mitri, you shouldn't deny your cravings. By telling yourself not to have that "bad" food you can increase the want for those items. Allow yourself to have a tiny bit of what you want this way over time it will lose its appeal.
Instead of giving in to your craving immediately, you can try the delay technique. By telling yourself it is okay to wait for that snack, it will help reduce impulsive eating. "Plus, when you know you can have it at a later time, it becomes less urgent," says Melissa Mitri.
Try easing those cravings with a cup of tea. Christina Towle, nutritionist explains, "Tea helps comfort and calm a hungry stomach while also hydrating the body so it feels full."
Before treating yourself to those Doritos or Oreo cookies, stop and take a few deep breaths. Mitri says this works because it helps you slow down and relax, giving you time to evaluate the situation.
When those cravings hit, distract yourself with something else. Nutritionist, Julie Mancuso, suggests walking the dog, doing yoga or listening to music. Food cravings only last a few minutes so if you can take your mind off of that craving hopefully you can go without giving in to temptation.
