There’s no magic fix or shortcut to delay or reverse the aging process, but there are things we can do to help slow it down. Plenty of research has found that working out can help keep the brain and body young. We can’t stop the hands of time, but being physically active does promote longevity and these are some simple ways to add more exercise to your life.
- Try some “exercise snacks”- When you’re short on time, these are perfect because they only take a small amount of time and give you the same benefits as a full workout. A study finds that just sprinting up three flights of stairs three times a day is enough to boost health markers linked to better cardiovascular health and overall longevity in otherwise sedentary adults.
- Jog for 30 minutes-Research finds that “highly active” adults are actually younger on a cellular level than people their age who don’t exercise. Study authors suggest women can get that “highly active” lifestyle by jogging for 30 minutes five times a week and those who do were found to have a biological clock nine years younger than sedentary people and seven years younger than “moderately active” folks.
- Walk briskly- Walking can be great exercise and if you put some pep in your step, it can help you live longer. A study from the Mayo Clinic finds that people who walk at a faster pace tend to live longer, more functional lives, regardless of body mass index. It suggests a pace of about 100 steps a minute or three miles an hour can do it.
- Add a furry exercise partner- Owning a dog is associated with a longer lifespan, according to one study, and walking with your pet can boost physical activity levels. Another study concludes dog owners lead more active lifestyles during all four seasons, which is definitely a boost for longevity.
