The way you start your morning can set the tone for the rest of the day. Even if you’re not a morning person, there are little things you can do when you wake up that can help your mood and stress levels as your day begins. Productivity experts share what they do to kick off their weekday mornings with a good start.
- Drink water - It’s all about rehydrating for time management coach Anna Dearmon Kornick, who admits she’s NOT a morning person. She says she drinks a big glass of ice water every morning before she has coffee to help her feel more alert, jumpstart her metabolism and help flush out toxins.
- Get centered - As a night owl, productivity coach Samphy Y says he relies on three simple habits to start his mornings off right: a positive affirmation, like “I am calm. Breathe,” meditation and gratitude journaling, where he lists three things that he does to make his day great.
- Look to the end of the day - “Start the day by setting your own finish line,” recommends productivity coach Grace Marshall. She looks ahead at what’s on her agenda for the day and decides how she wants it to end and what success looks like today.
- Write down daily goals - For productivity consultant Lindsey Holmes, the day begins with praying, followed by writing in a goal-setting journal.
- Get in a creative headspace - After getting her kids up and ready for school, time management expert Laura Vanderkam makes her way to her desk to read and write in her “free writing file” to help start the day in a creative space.
- Something that brings pleasure - For years, Vox senior editor Rachel Wilkerson Miller used to wake up and scroll social media apps, which she says is “a horrible way to start the day.” These days, she reads the news, then does something she really enjoys - a crossword puzzle and now Wordle. “It’s a nice, gentle way to start the day that has nothing to do with productivity,” she explains, “and everything to do with introducing a little pleasure into my morning routine.”
