Last Wednesday in Miami’s Allapattah neighborhood, a homeless man found a six-year-old boy wandering alone late at night and stepped in to help. Arnett Johnson, who has been living on a bench since his release from prison six months ago, checked the area for the child’s family before calling police and staying with the boy until officers arrived. Police say the child had been alone and note that he had delayed speech, which made identifying him more difficult.
Officers later identified the boy after a school officer recognized him from a flyer and helped connect authorities to his family. A witness reported that the child and his mother had gone missing the night before, and the mother returned home without him early Thursday morning. She was later arrested and charged with child neglect without bodily harm.
The boy was placed with the Florida Department of Children and Families. Police are crediting Johnson with protecting the child and keeping him safe until help arrived.
