On Monday morning, a Michigan teen was safely recovered after being abducted from his school bus stop, thanks to the quick actions of his classmates. Hamtramck Public Schools board president Abdulmalik Algahaim says several students witnessed the incident and used social media and cell phone information to help track the student’s location while contacting police. In less than 30 minutes, officers were able to locate the vehicle, rescue the student, and take the suspect into custody.
Police say the abduction occurred just after 7 a.m. and they recovered a weapon at the scene. The 16-year-old Frontier International Academy student was confirmed to be safe, and officials say there is no ongoing threat to the community. Authorities didn’t release any more details due to the ongoing investigation.
In the wake of the incident, city and school officials say they’re working with transportation partners to increase safety during student pick-up and drop-off. They’re also encouraging families to review safety practices, including walking in groups and reporting suspicious activity.
