How To Say You Are Not Comfortable Attending A Big Event

As things begin to slowly creep back to normalcy many people are starting to step back into the world. Ball games, concerts and all types of large events are making a come back but some are not ready to attend. As we all know, it can be difficult to avoid peer pressure and sometimes you just don't want to hurt someone's feelings. Here are a few ways to help you say "No" in a polite manner.

We are technically still in a pandemic. There have been over half a million deaths and even though many have already received the vaccine that does not mean we are out of the woods yet. Humans are social creatures but some are not ready to go to large scale events. If you are not comfortable being around multiple people do not let someone guilt you into going. Just because you are not ready to take that step doesn't mean you are making too much of the situation. You are allowed to make your own choices.

Many of us want to avoid confrontation at all costs but don't let conflict pressure you into attending. Yes it can be difficult to tell a loved one or close friend you cannot go to their wedding, party, etc. but do not let that sway you into going. Psychologist Dr. Aimee Daramus says to "Try not to let THIER choices or views affect YOUR health decisions."

As to actually how to go about saying "No," according to national etiquette expert Diane Gottsman, say no as soon as possible and keep it "short, sweet and polite." Honesty is the best policy here. Let them know you are still not comfortable traveling or being in large crowds. You can also include a statement that says thank you for understanding and of course the apology for not being able to attend.

Peer pressure does not disappear when you are an adult. Do not let others opinions, feelings or thoughts take precedence over your own. Remember, people who care about you should respect whatever decision you choose to make.
