A survey done by AskVet, took 2,000 Americans who own dogs and/or cats, and asked them how much money they actually spend on their fur babies. Between anxiety and expenses they found that owning a pet can in many ways feel like having a child.
Food, vet bills and even that adoption fee can add up. The average cost of rescuing an animal is around $176, which includes adoption fees and supplies. Once you have that new pet at home most people surveyed spend around $111 a month on their pet. Over the course of your animal's lifetime, on average 10 years, that could add up to $13,320.
Most owners would say that having a pet has improved their lives. Over half of those who were surveyed say they have learned the true meaning of unconditional love. 52% of people say that their pet has made them more active while 25% say their pet helps them eat healthier.
82% of people say that their pet gives them a sense of calm,61% of people say their pet helps improve their mood, while 24% say their furbaby helps boost their productivity.
Meanwhile, over 45% actively worry that their pet might get sick or hurt, while another 33% worry their pet may be unhappy. Overall, 76% of pet owners say that they could not imagine life without their animal and that having pets nourishes the soul.
