Stay Healthy Even If You Sit At A Computer All Day

Sitting all day is not healthy and for many of us sitting in front of a computer screen is the normal. Especially, with people having to work from home we find ourselves sitting more than ever. A sedentary lifestyle can increase your risk for type 2 diabetes, obesity and heart disease according to the CDC. This all day sitting can cause us not only physical stresses but mental strain as well.

Try these tips if you sit all day to help improve your health while your at your desk.

Make sure you are practicing good sitting posture. "Good sitting posture" means that you are keeping your body and spine in a neutral position. Your hands and forearms parallel to the floor, elbows at 90-degree angles and feet flat on the floor. Having good posture increases muscle and joint strength. Ergonomic furniture is designed with you in mind. Think about investing in yourself by purchasing a standing desk or chair with a proper seat cushion and lumbar support. There are even cushioned keyboard and mouse pads that have wrist supports to help relive that carpal tunnel pain.

You want to keep your neck in that neutral position so make sure your computer monitor is in your direct line of sight. You do not want to have to look up or down at your screen straining your neck and shoulders.

Make sure you take breaks! Get up every 20 minutes and walk around or stretch for just 5 minutes. This will give your brain a much deserved break and get the blood moving again. This can help prevent pain and tension in your body.

Lastly, make sure you step away from your desk to eat lunch. You will be more productive if you eat a meal that leaves you feeling satisfied so when you return to work you can focus.
