Let Go Of Control

Letting go of control is harder for some than others. Dr. Amy Johnson published an article at TinyBuddha.com talking about how to let go of control by learning the art of surrendering. People tend to worry about things because of what they "think" will happen. She says that fear is the reason we like to control things.

Dr. Johnson says that control is a result of being attached to an outcome. We need to be able to trust that no matter what comes our way we will be okay with the end result. "Expectations" can leave us feeling disappointed or upset. When you do not try to predict anything in life and just "go with the flow" you will be more accepting of the path that comes your way. Being open to all possibilities can help you let go of that stress that comes with expectations.

We have to learn to "Surrender" to control. Control comes in many different forms for each individual. Surrendering means you are going to be accepting of what the outcome may be and faith that it will all turn out well without your input.

Dr. Amy Johnson suggests you ask yourself a few questions:

What am I afraid will happen if I let go of control? Pinpoint your fear. Ask yourself if the outcome you expect to play out will it ruin your day/evening. For instance, if you ask your husband to pick up milk on his way home you can either trust he will remember or stress about hoping he will not forget. Even if he did forget, what is so bad about that?

Who's business are you in? Are the things you are trying to control items you can directly influence or is it someone else's business? Try to stick to things you can oversee and make a direct influence in.

Would letting go feel like freedom? More than likely. You can cause yourself anxiety by worrying about things you cannot control but letting go can be freeing thus causing yourself less stress.

When you paddle upstream it is tough and tiring but when you can give into the flow of the stream you are able to find a more peaceful path. Stop worrying about the details and just believe that everything will come out right in the long run.
