Foods That Could Help Slow The Aging Process

Many people want to stay looking youthful as long as possible but the fountain of youth still eludes us. Some people resort to plastic surgery and botox to keep themselves looking fresh. What you put into your body is important in trying to keep yourself looking and feeling the best. EatThis.com referred to expert dieticians and nutritionist to find out what foods help keep our bodies in optimum condition.

We have seen the trend of avocados sky rocket. Avocados are full of heart-healthy fats and fiber according to dietician Laura Burak, co-founder of GetNaked® Nutrition. They also contain B vitamins, potassium and vitamins A, C, E and K. Melissa Mitri, RD, says that "Avocados are an abundant source of inflammation-fighting fats that promote smooth, glowing skin."

Salmon, cod and herring are fish high in omega-3 fatty acids. Research has proven that these fatty fish can help with inflammation and have the ability of lowering the risk of Alzheimer's.

We have all heard about blueberries antioxidant properties but they are also high in vitamin A and vitamin C. These vitamins helps keep your skins' elasticity and may protect your skin by reducing inflammation. Along with blueberries, strawberries, blackberries and raspberries also have a ton of antioxidants. Dietician Melissa Mitri says these are great choices for helping fight off the aging process.

According to registered dietician, Marie Ruggles, leafy greens like spinach and kale are a superb choice. They contain vitamins, minerals, fiber and other bioactive compounds. These can protect our cells and DNA. Ruggles says "Cooked greens, such as sautéed baby kale or a salad with raw dark greens both work very well."

Olive oil is another great addition to your diet and even skin care routine. Olive oil is made up of a monosaturated fatty acid called oleic acid. In areas of the world where people live the longest, the Blue Zone, olive oil is a common ingredient. Marie Ruggles explains why olive oil is so good for our skin, "Our cell membranes are made up of fatty acids just like those supplied by olive oil. Cells are constantly renewing and need a regular supply of fatty acids from olive oil to manufacture new healthy cells."

Make sure you are adding in nuts and seeds into your diet. They have healthy fats and are filled with omega-3s and vitamin E. Vitamin E helps repair your skin from damage as we age. These are all important to an anti-aging diet.
