Habits That Make You Look Older

Looking youthful is and always will be the latest trend. Many Americans are obsessed with looking young which is why the beauty industry is a multi-million dollar business. You don't have to go to the plastic surgeon to keep yourself looking young. Try eliminating a few of these everyday habits to keep your skin looking fresh.

Stop drinking soda pop. First and foremost sugary drinks can add unwanted pounds to the scale but it can also make you age faster as well. According to a study done by, Elizabeth Blackburn from the University of California - San Francisco, drinking soda can cause you to have shorter telomeres. Telomeres are the parts of the cell that hold your DNA information and they get shorter as we grow older. Once they get too short, they can no longer multiply to help replenish body tissues and they die. High doses of sugar can effect our metabolism which in turn can influence disease development thus shortening our telomeres.

According to a study published in the journal of Clinical Dermatology, excessive amounts of sugar are linked to aging. If you want your skin to stay looking plump and youthful you need to consume foods that promote building amino acids that help fight against aging. High loads of sugar bind to amino acids in collagen and elastin. This causes damage to those cells, that help the skin stay youthful, making it harder for them to make repairs.

Alcohol can have lasting effects on you. It causes dehydration which does not benefit your skin. It can cause inflammation throughout your body, which can show up as having a flush face, and cause swelling and breaking of your capillaries. A study done in 2019 of over 3,200 women, who drank more than 8 drinks a week, showed that they had more upper facial lines, under-eye puffiness, oral commissures, midface volume loss, and blood vessels.

A lack of sleep can cause you to look and feel more aged than you think. Our bodies recover during sleep. Whether it be brain functions or skin renewal, your body takes that time to repair and rejuvenate yourself. Clinical and Experimental Dermatology published a study saying women who got quality sleep saw 30% better skin recovery. Of course sleep experts recommend 7 to 9 hours of sleep every night.

Smoking is not only a hazard to your lungs but it is also terrible for your skin. Tobacco contains many harsh and toxic chemicals and when burned that smoke floats around your face. Inhaling smoke causes your blood vessels to constrict and prevents oxygen and nutrients from circulating to the skin.

The sun feels lovely and provides us with vitamin D but too much sun can be harmful. The ultraviolet rays damage the skin making it look older. They call this photoaging. It can develop wrinkles and fine lines due to the changes made to the collagen in a layer of your skin called the dermis. Other causes can be pigmentation changes like sun spots, liver spots and freckles. Plus, loss of skin tone and even broken capillaries or what many call spider veins can appear. To try and prevent these effects you can use a sunscreen with at least 30spf. You want to be protected against UVA and UVB rays.

Stress can also cause you to look older. According to the Harvard Medical School, stress can also shorten your telomeres. Not only can shorter telomeres increase the looks of aging but they can also increase the risk of chronic conditions like heart disease and cancer.
