How To Deal With Mommy Burnout

Since the dawn of time moms have dealt with feeling overwhelmed by taking care of the family. In the past year, things have gotten even harder for not just moms but dads as well according to expert Erika Sóuter. She has met with over 100 mothers who say parenting feels exhausting. Research has shown that moms have been enduring three times as many child care hours during the pandemic, thus causing more stress than ever.

There are a few things you can do if you are feeling that "mommy burnout." The first step you need to address is how to relieve your stress and/or anxiety. If you are not in a stable mental mindset, how will you be able to help your family? She says to focus on yourself and your needs. She explains "There is no grand prize for being the mommy martyr who never does anything for herself."

You should have a supportive network of people. Stay connected with friends and family that you can lean on when in need. Sometimes talking to someone, outside of who lives at your home, can help improve your mental state. Laughing improves your mood by boosting your endorphins and more than likely your friends need an escape as well.

Set aside some time for yourself. Even if it is just 15 minutes a day you can increase your sense of calm by being consistent with this practice. Yoga, exercising or even just kicking back and watching your favorite show can ease your stress and anxiety.

Have your kids help out around the house. This will build good characteristics in your kids by teaching them about responsibility and hard work. Just remember, based upon their age it might not be done correctly but at least they can help with vacuuming, prepping dinner or putting away the laundry.

Be honest! Not just with yourself but with your kids as well. By setting realistic expectations and talking about the "what ifs" you can avoid some of that anxiety. Especially with the new school year upon us.

Safety is always a concern that can cause stress and the pandemic has increased the need to feel secure. If you feel better by your kid wearing a mask to school or by being vaccinated then do so. Having peace of mind can help relieve that anxiety. Sóuter says these are things that should be non-negotiable and you should stick with them no matter what your friends, family or neighbors say.
