If you’ve been dating long enough, chances are you’ve experienced ghosting. No one wants it to happen to them, but with the rise in popularity of dating apps and communicating via text, it’s that much easier for someone to cut you out of their life without further contact. Research shows 25% of people have been ghosted at some point, but it’s probably even higher than that.
Ghosting can feel like it happens out of nowhere and only after the person stops communicating with you do you realize what’s happened. The early warning signs of ghosting aren’t always easy to detect, but here’s what to watch out for:
- They become distant- You may sense that they’re pulling away from you, that they’re not paying attention during conversations or not making eye contact. You may also notice that while they keep checking their phone, they don’t seem to answer your texts or calls.
- They don’t want to meet up- The thing about someone who’s going to ghost you is they’ll keep you hanging on until they do. They’ll make plans with you, then cancel at the last minute with little explanation and if they’re not trying to reschedule, it could be a red flag.
- They don’t communicate as much- Maybe they take longer to text back or respond with one-word answers, so it seems like they’re not trying to keep the conversation going. These could be signs they’re losing interest and ghosting could be next.
- They go quiet on social media- If someone you’re seeing suddenly stops interacting with you on social media, but still stays in contact with an occasional text, consider it another red flag.
- You’re making all the effort- It’s also not a good sign if you suddenly find that you’re the only one initiating plans or texts. If they don’t make an effort to see you or communicate with you until you do, it could mean you’re about to be ghosted.
