How To Make A Great First Impression

Whether you’re meeting a new employer, business associate, or your next future ex-girlfriend, a first impression can make all the difference. You could either come off as the guy who truly seems to have his stuff together…or you could come off weak, unaware, and instantly forgettable. How to up the odds? Try these tips:

  • Eye Contact – Just three seconds of direct non-imposing tells people that you’re interested and engaged. Just make sure you’re staring at eyes, and not boobs.
  • Compliments – We’re all love to be pet. Starting off with a genuine compliment instantly makes you more likable. Just don’t go overboard.
  • Smell – Brush your teeth, use mouthwash, or whatever else you need to do to ensure your breath isn’t a room killer. Also, choose a cologne that won’t have everyone who comes in contact with you smelling like you.
  • Handshake – It can’t be overstated how effective a good handshake can be. Too limp and soft, you’ll appear weak. Too strong, and you’re going to look confrontational. Firm and solid is the way to go.
  • Touching – Subtle arm and shoulder touches can work for you. Anything else, and you’re intrusive and borderline creepy.
  • Filler Words – They’re your enemy, and make you look unsure of yourself. Speak deliberately, and stay away from “ums,” “basically,” “like,” “literally,” and excessive cursing.
  • Listening – Your body language communicates how engaged and invested you are – be an active listener.
  • Names – They can be tricky, but mental exercises and word association can help you remember people’s names, so you don’t have to fake it.
  • Phones – Put them away. Unless you’re saving a number or showing a pic that’s relevant to the conversation, you don’t need it and will look distracted.
  • Questions – Have some go-to questions ready to roll. They’ll make you look interested and curious, and the answers could lead to an interesting chat.
