There’s a lot of buzz around plant-based eating these days and adding more fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds to your diet can be good for you. But most meat-eaters aren’t ready to give up their beloved bacon and steak and Dr Ian Smith says they don’t have to … at least not altogether. Instead he advises adding more plants to your diet, while decreasing the amount of meat you eat.
Smith’s new book, “Plant Power: Flip Your Plate, Change Your Weight,” helps people “harness the benefits of plant-based eating” without having to miss out on the meat they love. According to the doctor, plant-based eating comes with health benefits including:
- Lowering your cholesterol and blood pressure
- Reducing risk for heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes
- Helping with weight loss
- Increasing energy
- Boosting your mood
For those concerned about how they’ll get enough protein if they’re not eating as many animal products, Smith says beans like black, kidney, lima, chickpeas and edamame, are the way to go. And in addition to the health benefits, he says flipping your diet from 70% meat to 30% meat and 70% plants leads to “natural and pain-free weight loss” while keeping you full and satisfied.
