Now that spring has arrived and we’re enjoying warmer weather, it’s time to shake off any lingering winter blues. They don’t magically go away just because the calendar says the new season is here, so how do we get them out of our lives? Therapists suggest these mood-boosting ideas to embrace everything spring at home.
- Schedule outdoor time - A little sunlight goes a long way and it can help you focus, reduces anxiety and even improves sleep, according to research. “Being in nature is psychologically good for you,” explains therapist Nicole Arzt. “Even if it’s taking a quick walk around the block after dinner or drinking your morning coffee on the patio, small moments matter.”
- Add more plants - Having a plant or flowers on your desk or kitchen table can be an instant pick-me-up. This season is also the perfect time to plant some flowers in your backyard or balcony garden. Neuropsychologist Alexander Burgemeester says the beautiful scenery the blooms create “helps to reduce stress levels and it can feel good to watch something you planted grow.”
- Add some color to your surroundings - Brighten up your space to banish those winter blues. Jod Kapilakan, CEO of mental well-being company Abundance No Limits, suggests turning on as many lights as you can as soon as you wake up in the morning to “fill your environment with light.” Let the sunlight in by opening the blinds, too.
- Move your body - When your body feels good, you have more energy and are better able to deal with things in a positive way. “One of the best things you can do to improve your overall health and bring sunshine back into your life is exercising,” Dr. Brenda Wade explains. And if you can exercise in nature, she says you’re boosting that “feel good” part of your brain even more.
