Dating can take up a lot of our time and energy, and when it’s not working out with the people you meet, it can be exhausting. When that happens, taking a break for a while to refocus your attention can be helpful, according to relationship expert Kate Moyle. Dating burnout is real, but taking that pause can help you avoid it.
Moyle says these are the signs you might need a break from dating:
- You feel like you’re on a hamster wheel - If you’re stuck in a cycle of looking for or trying the same thing again and again without getting anywhere, dating can become boring and frustrating.
- You’re “should” dating - If you’re only doing it because you feel like you should be dating, but your heart isn’t really in it, give yourself a break.
- You’re putting too much pressure on it - When you think of dating as the key to your happiness, you’re only setting yourself up to fail. “Like anything under too much pressure, it’s not the best environment for anything to thrive in,” Moyle says.
- It’s all you can think about - If dating has become your whole world, it can help to take a step back to give it some space while you spend time on other things that bring you joy
- Your self esteem has taken a big hit - Rejection isn’t easy and dealing with it on repeat can feel even worse. So giving yourself time to heal may be a good move.
And when decide to take that break from dating, here’s how to do it right:
- Delete the apps - Pause your dating app profile or delete it all together so you don’t start swiping again out of boredom or habit.
- Start something new - Use your time to do something you want to try and if you can do it with a friend? Even better.
- Tell your loved ones - Make them aware so they’ll stop asking you about your dating life and you’ll be able to enjoy your break more.
