Depending on where you live, keeping the house chilly in summer is a thing.

Energy experts are saying hold up.

They say the best temperature to keep your thermostat this summer is 78 degrees.

The Department of Energy recommends keeping a home warmer than usual when you're out of the house to avoid unnecessary energy costs, and utility companies across the U.S. are recommending 78 degrees Fahrenheit as the ideal temperature.

The DOE also recommends vacuuming the dust out of your vents and weather stripping your house to keep the cool air from leaking out.

Here are some other tips to keep the house cool:

  • Install window coverings to prevent heat gain through windows during the day.
  • Turn off the ceiling fans when you leave a room. Fans cool people, not rooms, the Department of Energy states.
  • When taking a shower or bath, use bathroom fans to remove heat and humidity.
