Early Sunday morning, an officer with the Goodyear, Arizona, Police Department performed a heroic rescue after witnessing a fiery crash on Interstate 10 in the West Valley. While returning from booking a suspect, the officer saw a woman trapped in a burning car, honking her horn for help. He ran to the vehicle, broke the driver’s side window, and pulled her to safety.
In the process, the officer attempted to put out the fire with his bare hands, sustaining serious burns. The woman was taken to a nearby burn center in critical condition but is expected to survive, as is the officer, who’s recovering from his injuries. Officials later revealed that the rescued woman is the daughter of a Goodyear firefighter.
Goodyear Police Chief Brian Issitt praised the officer’s actions, calling them a “heroic and selfless act” that exemplifies the bravery of the department. He says the officer's quick thinking and courage saved a life and is an example of the strength and unity within the public safety community.
