Specialized Team Rescues Teen & Dogs Trapped In Abandoned Well

On Saturday, a 15-year-old in California was rescued after getting trapped in an abandoned mine shaft while trying to save two family dogs that had fallen in. The teen climbed down about 15 to 20 feet into the shaft and wasn’t able to get back out.

Rescue teams from the Nevada County Consolidated Fire District and Grass Valley Fire Department responded quickly and performed a technical “vertical rope rescue.” The effort involved complex rigging and ropes to safely extract the teen and the two dogs from the shaft. Fire Chief Jason Robitaille says that after about an hour, everyone was safely brought to the surface without serious injuries.

video posted online by the Fire District captures the moment one of the dogs was lifted out with a harness and pulley system to cheers. The teen was checked out on site and found to be unharmed, while the dogs were treated for mild dehydration. Robitaille praised the person who called in the incident and the firefighters for their teamwork. He also reminded the public to report abandoned shafts and avoid unsafe structures.
