A 16-year-old lifeguard in Maricopa, Arizona, is being recognized as a hero after saving two children from potential drowning at the Copper Sky Aquatics Center during his first month on the job. Last weekend, Davian Herrera noticed a young girl, Jude, struggling in the deep section of the pool and quickly jumped in to rescue her. Surveillance video captured the incident, and Jude’s mother, Natalie Davis, says her daughter was taken to the hospital and is now doing well.
Davis shares that Jude is immune-compromised, and the situation could have been much worse without Herrera’s quick response. The girl returned to the pool days later to thank Herrera personally, saying she was glad to be alive and not scared to swim again. Herrera had also rescued another child on his very first day at work, a few weeks earlier in the same area of the pool.
Maricopa Vice Mayor Henry Wade praised the teen for his bravery, saying it takes a special person to respond to danger so quickly. Herrera says he wasn’t nervous because lifeguards train for these situations and that it’s his responsibility to keep people safe. He also expressed gratitude for being able to help and says he’ll continue doing his job to make sure everyone returns home safely.
