While vacationing at Disney World with his family, Illinois physician Dr. Jeffrey Schiappa saved the life of a 17-year-old girl who collapsed at the Hollywood Studios theme park. He noticed a group of girls crying around a teen who was unresponsive on the ground and discovered her pulse was irregular. Using a nearby AED (automated external defibrillator), Schiappa gave her two shocks, successfully restarting her heart before paramedics arrived.

The girl, who was on a school band trip from Pennsylvania, was later diagnosed with a serious heart rhythm disorder. She coded multiple times in the ambulance and hospital, but ultimately survived and had a pacemaker implanted.

The doctor says he’s grateful for having noticed the emergency and for the positive outcome. “If this had happened when she was away at college after graduation, she could have died,” he notes. The teen’s parents were deeply grateful and sent Schiappa a note thanking him for saving their daughter.
