While he and his K9 partner Jax were recently on patrol during one of the hottest days of the year, Officer Jonathan Cox of the Wyandotte, Michigan, Police Department, noticed elderly resident Dory Oliver struggling to mow her lawn. She was balancing the mower with one hand while holding onto her walker with the other. She told Officer Cox that she had no one to help her with her yard work and despite contacting several companies, no one called back.
Cox told Oliver to head inside, promising to take care of the lawn himself. After his 12-hour shift, he returned without Jax and began working. The job turned out to be bigger than he’d estimated and involved mowing overgrown grass, removing storm debris, and cleaning gutters. Over the course of two days, Cox completely restored Oliver’s yard, leaving her feeling grateful and emotional.
Oliver called the police chief to express her appreciation and even brought donuts to the station. She says she’s still in awe that the officer, who didn’t know her, had helped out of pure kindness. Cox, an eight-year veteran of the force, says he feels blessed to be in a position to help others. Oliver has now taken to calling him her “adopted grandson,” and he plans to continue keeping up her yard.
