After learning about charity in school, four-year-old Easton Peterson from Oxford, Michigan, started raising money for the K9 Stray Rescue League. His mom, Alexandra Peterson, says September’s “virtue of the month” lesson on charity inspired family discussions that led Easton to choose helping dogs in his community. For the past month, he’s been collecting donations and returning pop cans to support the shelter.
The K9 Stray Rescue League, which has operated in Oxford for more than 30 years, rescues dogs from Detroit Animal Care and Control and typically adopts out around 300 dogs a year. Lead evaluator and trainer Kelly Barker says she was moved by Easton’s compassion at such a young age. She explains that the donations will go toward food and medical care for the roughly 30 dogs currently housed at the shelter and others placed in foster homes.
Easton’s family shared his project on social media, where the community responded with generous support. So far, he has raised over $300 and collected more than 30 items from the shelter’s Amazon wishlist. His dad, Chad Peterson, says it’s been heartwarming to see his son’s excitement and empathy, and the family hopes this experience encourages Easton to continue giving back in the future.
