Last month, California farmworkers Carlos Perea Romero and Angel Zarco rescued 20 children from a burning school bus in Madera County. They were working on a broken tractor when they saw the bus catch fire and quickly alerted the driver. Zarco says the fire started within minutes and there were about 20 students still on board.
Romero and Zarco helped each of the “terrified” children escape the bus. Some of the kids ran and hid behind almond trees because they didn’t know where else to go. The men tried to use a fire extinguisher, but the flames had already gotten too big to contain.
Last week, they were honored by the Madera County Board of Supervisors for their bravery. County officials praised their “selfless courage and bravery” and said their actions saved lives. Romero thanked God, saying, “God put you in that place for a reason,” while Zarco said he was “happy to help out the community.”
