Couple Saves Girl After Her Seat Belt Reportedly Fails On Roller Coaster

Missouri couple Chris and Cassie Evans were riding the Mamba roller coaster at Worlds of Fun in Kansas City when they heard a scream from the seat behind them. They say a young girl on the ride told them her seat belt had come undone during the first big drop. The couple, who are familiar with the ride, helped hold the girl in place throughout the rest of the three-minute ride.

Chris says he looped his arm under the girl’s lap bar and held her wrist while Cassie pushed down on the girl’s legs as the ride continued at up to 60 miles per hour over hills and turns, including a spiral helix and four camelback hills. After the ride, they reported the situation to park management, but didn’t get a chance to speak to the girl again.

A spokesperson for Worlds of Fun says they immediately shut down the ride and only reopened later that day after an inspection. The park says the Mamba has a multilayered restraint system and that guest safety is their top priority. The spokesperson says they also performed a more comprehensive safety review at a later date and made some modifications to the ride. The couple, who have season tickets to the park, say they don’t plan to return until they see further changes.
